Focus and Concentration (ASSIGNMENT 1 ARTICLE 2, IDM)
Can someone concentrate on two different things at the same time? If I say, you are already performing two completely different functions simultaneously right now, do you accept it?
Actually, concentrating on two different things is not possible for our conscious mind, it is all about how fast we are switching contexts. But our subconscious is capable of performing multi-tasking, without switching context.
Most of the times, we are already performing multiple functions simultaneously; breathing, heart beating, reading this and multiple functions without even letting our conscious mind know. This suggests that conscious mind can get tired, but not your subconscious.
What if we train our subconscious to focus and concentrate?
Coming back to our main topic. How to concentrate?
First, we need to find what are our distracting points which keep us from concentrating on a particular function. And then plan to avoid that.
Let’s assume we are trying to read a book and missing concentration, what could be the reason? there could be noise from the surroundings. To curb that, we have to search for a peaceful place. Or we can train our brain to not hear that noise. For this, we have to make reading as more interesting and important than any others, such that we get involved in that completely.
If it is our own thoughts which are distracting us from reading, first listing down those thoughts and filtering might help. Fulfilling the thoughts can make the brain happier and happiness is a beautiful solution to everything. If we satisfy our distracting thoughts, they will not distract us anymore.
Make it Interesting
It is easier to concentrate on something which we feel more interesting than others. This can be easily proven, if we watch our favorite program, we won’t observe what is happening in the surroundings (since our conscious brain can not focus on more than one thing at a time). Hence, making the daily chores interesting can help in better performing them.
Schedule everything
By scheduling the day, we can get concentration to do respective functions at that respective time. Scheduling automatically filters our thoughts because we have already allotted time to our brain to do something.
Now let’s see how to talk or train our subconscious. The only way for us to talk with our subconscious mind is through the conscious mind. It is hard, but it is not impossible.
We can talk with our subconscious mind before going to sleep and immediately after getting up from sleep. This is the time, where the conscious mind has no block.
Habit
We all have come across this 21 days challenge. A study says it takes 21 subsequent days of practising something to make your subconscious to adapt to it. That is the reason, you doing something repeatedly will become a habit for you. The same way, we can make focus and concentration also a habit for us.
Meditation
This is more powerful than we think. There are some blocks between our conscious and subconscious thoughts, by practising meditation regularly, we can reduce those thoughts.
So practising meditation regularly is a good tool to be able to do anything effortlessly. There are lots of benefits in meditation. Meditation brings peace to us and calms our brain.
